Food Safety Weekly Roundup 3

Pair of Companies Recall Macadamia Nuts

Two separate recalls have been issued for macadamia nuts due to potential contamination. Anderson & Sons Shelling, Inc. of Vina, CA, recalled their dry roasted macadamia nuts nationwide after discovering Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Meanwhile, Sunco and Frenchie LLC of Pine Brook, NJ, has issued their own recall of Terrafina branded raw macadamia nuts due to possible Salmonella contamination. Both Listeria and Salmonella infections can be severe and potentially life threatening, especially among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Both recalls serve as a reminder of the importance of food safety vigilance and responsibility.

The FDA Aims for 2025 Budget Increase

The FDA has requested $7.2 billion for the 2025 fiscal year, an increase of $495 million from last year’s budget. The budget increase is aimed to enhance food safety, nutrition, and supply chain resiliency. One major goal of this initiative is to modernize the FDA’s tools and processes to better prevent and mitigate foodborne illness outbreaks. This funding is crucial for maintaining and improving safety standards and ensuring public health. The House Appropriations Committee will likely discuss the budget on July 10, while the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee is expected to hold a session on the issue the week of July 8.
